Recently I was taking a course for CEOs. What I did not expect was the attitude of the CEO-coach towards classic middle managers. Sometimes he said exactly that when he commented on the students’ answers: “ugh, manager mindset, don’t be like that.” I don’t know, maybe this is some kind of C-level meme, but I get the meaning.
Manager mindset is when a person comes to you and says: “what do you want me to do?” Non-manager mindset is when a person says: “for such and such reasons we need to do X.”
Manager mindset is when a person comes to you and says: “I know that we need to do X, but what is our budget?” Non-manager mindset is when a person says: “in order to do X, so many things are needed, so I’ve calculated three options.”
In short, it is much easier to be a person with a “manager mindset”. So simpler that a parrot can replace it. And it’s more difficult to be a person with a “non-manager mindset,” but you can at least have a serious conversation with such a person and agree on something. In the long run, it is much better to be this way.
